Yonkers Raceway track opened in 1899 as the Empire City Trotting Club. The raceway was built at a cost of $780,000 by copper magnate William H. Clark and grocery tycoon James Butler. Its opening day in September 4 drew 12,000 patrons.
Today, Yonkers Raceway continues its preeminence as a major attraction to the tri-state area. It also hosts the New York Night of Champions, the "best of the best" race among the 2- and 3-year offering a total $1.2 million purse.
